Two clinical teams have been shortlisted for Respiratory Team of the Year at the 2020 British Medical Journal (BMJ) Awards.

The ImpACT+ Team and the Respiratory Infection Team have both been shortlisted in the same category for this year’s awards and will present a video presentation to judges shortly in their bid to be crowned winners.

ImpACT+, which has also been shortlisted for a HSJ Value Award for Respiratory Care Initiative of the Year, is a service which is delivered by Respiratory Consultants, Specialist Respiratory Nurses, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists.

The service has transformed specialist community respiratory services for people with Chronic Respiratory Disease for people living in Southern Derbyshire and Erewash, actively working with colleagues Primary Care to review all patients from the point of diagnosis straight through to the later stages of disease and advance planning.

Robin Evans, Clinical Service Manager for ImpACT+, said: “It’s fantastic to be shortlisted for such a prestigious award and a great opportunity for the team to receive recognition the hard work and exceptional patient care we are providing.

“This unique model of service delivery could lead to system wide change in how community respiratory services are delivered which is an amazing prospect.”

The Respiratory Infection Team has been shortlisted for their work with managing patients who are admitted to hospital with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP).

The team of four specialist nurses with support from consultants and pharmacists was established to ensure patients with CAP receive improved quality of care, telephone support at home after discharge and better antibiotic stewardship using novel bedside microbiological tests to guide antibiotic choice. All of this has resulted in patients with CAP staying in hospital for less time and a reduction in mortality rate in the high severity patient group.

Dr Tom Bewick, Respiratory Consultant at Royal Derby Hospital, said: “It’s fantastic to see the hard work of the team recognised at a national level, and it’s testament to everyone’s hard work to have been shortlisted. To have two respiratory teams from the Trust shortlisted for the same award is also brilliant and shows that the teams at UHDB are striving hard to deliver exceptional care together.”

The teams will discover if they have won on 1 October.
