Derby Breast Unit
The Derby breast unit is a self contained unit located within the Royal Derby Hospital, staffed by consultant surgeons, three consultant radiologists, two consultant oncologists, a consultant plastic surgeon and 6 breast care nurses.
We offer a wide range of expertise covering the diagnosis and management of benign and malignant breast disease. Screening services are provided for the NHS Breast Screening Programme in Southern Derbyshire and the Familial Cancer Service. In our screening service we have about 78,000 women in Southern Derbyshire who we invite every three years for screening.
We also run symptomatic clinics where anyone with breast symptoms (male and female) is referred by their GP, as well as a prosthetic fitting service.

Breast screening
The Derby and Burton Combined Breast Unit provides screening to Southern Derby, Southern Staffordshire and surrounding areas (approximately 150,000 screening population with age extension) at the Burton Breast Unit, Royal Derby Hospital and at our Satellite Screening Unit at Florence Nightingale Community Hospital.
Breast imaging is currently provided by consultant radiologists, a full-time long term locum, a consultant radiographer and a further speciality doctor currently in training. Their work is supported by a large cross site team of 12, reporting plain film, CT and MRI radiographers.
There is fully established advanced practice support from the mammography team who provide film reading, stereotactic core biopsy and breast needle localisations.

Symptomatic breast services
Access to this service is made through your GP.
This is for anyone with breast symptoms, either male or female. Everyone is seen within two weeks of their referral, as per government guidelines.
All necessary diagnostic investigations are performed at this visit by a multi-disciplinary team.

Prosthetic fitting service
A prosthetic fitting service is available for ladies who have had breast surgery. A wide range of bras and prostheses are available as well as swimwear and other accessories.

An experienced fitter is available at the following times;
Monday 8.30am - 1pm
Tuesday 12pm - 5pm
Wednesday 8.30am - 12.30pm
Thursday 8.30am - 5.30pm
Friday 8.30am - 5.30pm
