Mortuary tours at Royal Derby recognised as an area of best practice

Rebecca Purcell, Trainee APT at RDH

We’re delighted that the CQC has highlighted the tours of the mortuary offered by our mortuary team at the Royal Derby Hospital as an area of good practice.

Rebecca Purcell, Trainee Anatomical Pathology Technologist (APT), says that the tours are well received by staff and help to give them an insight into what working in the department is really like.

The tours take place around twice weekly and last for up to two hours, as clinical members of staff and stakeholders from the police and fire service for example, have an access all areas tour of the facility and have the chance to witness a post-mortem examination.

Staff are also told how the mortuary team support families during times of bereavement and offer a comfortable, welcoming space. Mortuary tours are also available at Queen’s Hospital Burton for staff members and fellow members of the emergency services on a one-to-one basis.
