Andy Carruthers CDIO

We are pleased to share that Andy Carruthers will continue to lead UHDB's digital transformation after being substantively appointed as Executive Chief Digital Information Officer, following a competitive recruitment process.

Andy initially joined the Trust on a 12-month secondment in May 2026, and will stay with the Trust as he now takes up the role permanently.

Andy said: "I'm delighted to have been appointed as Executive Chief Digital Information Officer. Since joining the Trust in May, I have received an incredibly warm welcome from colleagues across Derby, Burton and our wider services. The commitment, professionalism and compassion demonstrated every day by our teams has made a lasting impression on me, and I would like to sincerely thank everyone who has taken the time to share their expertise, insights and support over recent months.

"In that short time, I have seen first-hand that the greatest strength of UHDB is its people, as well as the significant opportunities that lie ahead. We have a lot to do, and I am excited to work alongside colleagues across the Trust to deliver our shared ambitions for patients and staff.

"I firmly believe that digital, data and innovation are powerful enablers of exceptional healthcare, and I am committed to playing my part in helping UHDB continue to improve and transform services. The future is incredibly exciting, and I am proud to continue listening, learning and working in partnership with colleagues across the organisation as part of Team UHDB."

Bringing over 20 years of NHS digital leadership experience, Andy has already had a significant impact on our digital approach at UHDB, with a key focus on making sure digital tools are practical, easy to use and genuinely improve patient care.

His previous roles include Group Chief Technology and Innovation Officer across the University Hospitals of Leicester and Northamptonshire (UHL-UHN) Group, where he led several major Nervecentre implementation programmes. This included the largest-ever deployment of Nervecentre clinical systems at Northampton General Hospital and the successful rollout of Nervecentre's PAS (Patient Administration System) in Leicester in 2025.

Garry Marsh, Executive Chief Nursing Officer and Deputy CEO, said: "On behalf of the Board, we are pleased that Andy will remain part of the Executive team, and continue to provide digital leadership at UHDB during a key period for the Trust as we prepare for our new EPR, Nervecentre, next year.

"Andy has extensive experience leading large‑scale digital, data and technology change. He is committed to making digital improvements work for everyone and putting patient safety at the core of all digital decisions. By listening to and working alongside colleagues across the Trust, he is already helping us develop practical, user-friendly solutions that improve care for our patients - great work that will now continue under his leadership."
