James Fussell, Governor

James FussellI am privileged to be appointed as Public Governor for the Trust as a representative from the University of Derby. I have worked in higher education for many years and have also worked in the private sector, in legal, governance and other roles.

My professional career has centred on legal, governance and assurance leadership, and I bring that perspective with me into this role. Through my work, I have seen first-hand how strong governance, clear values, and good decision-making shape organisational success. I hope to use this experience to contribute constructively and thoughtfully to the future of the NHS.

Like everyone, I have my own experiences of the NHS as a patient and family member, and I recognise the importance of bringing that perspective. But I also want to champion the perspectives of those who will form the NHS workforce of the future — the students at our University and the staff who collaborate closely with Trust colleagues in delivering education, training and research.

I recognise both the immense value of the NHS and the significant pressures it faces. It remains one of the most trusted and beloved institutions in public life, even while undergoing profound challenge and transformation. I hope to play a meaningful part in helping it evolve in a positive direction — grounded in good governance, strong relationships and a genuine commitment to inclusion.
