This week (16 to 22 June) is the National Pulmonary Rehabilitation Week. At the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) we are fortunate to have the dedicated respiratory service, ImpACT+. ImpACT+ deliver the Pulmonary Rehabilitation across Southern Derbyshire and Derby City.

An innovative new device which can help reduce the time patients need to spend receiving oxygen therapy is currently being evaluated at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB).
The device, named 'O2matic PRO 100', provides automated, safer, and more comfortable oxygen delivery to patients and will be used by colleagues at Queen's Hospital Burton for six months to analyse its benefits and effectiveness in a real-world setting. If the 'real world evaluation' (RWE) is successful, the machines could be rolled out more widely across the NHS.
In May 2022, UHDB implemented a new role to specifically help provide patients who have undergone a tracheostomy or laryngectomy with tailored, specialised care and advice.
Respiratory teams at Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Hospital Burton have been presented with their trophies and certificates after winning one of our Outstanding Contribution Awards at this year’s Annual Making a Difference Awards.
The lengths that UHDB teams have gone to during the pandemic to limit the spread of Covid-19 and to provide outstanding care to patients with other respiratory conditions has been recognised on a national scale. UHDB has been shortlisted for two awards at the Nursing Times Awards – for two separate projects that have helped reduce the spread of Covid-19 in our hospitals and allowed some patients with pneumonia to go home sooner than before.
More than 100 respiratory patients have now benefitted from care packages delivered by a virtual ward which provides ongoing care and support to patients in the community throughout the pandemic.

UHDB’s Respiratory Infection team has been crowned the Respiratory Team of the Year at the 2020 British Medical Journal (BMJ) Awards.
The team has been recognised for their outstanding work in improving the quality of care for patients admitted to hospital with pneumonia, as well as both reducing the length of time patients remain in hospital with the condition and improving support during their recovery.
