Covid-19, one year on: Stephanie Kettle

Stephanie Kettle one year

To mark the one year anniversary of the pandemic, members of Team UHDB are sharing their thoughts and reflections of their personal and work lives during Covid-19.

The pandemic will have had a very different impact on each and every one of us, so the one year anniversary since we started to see the first inpatients admitted is a good opportunity to reflect on the year gone and to look forward.

Today Emma, Stephanie Kettle, Assistant Practitioner, on Ward 208, Step Down Unit, has penned a poem of her account of the last 12 months.

One year on from start of Covid-19,
Who would have known what this would mean?
Lockdown was put into place, hands, face and space.
Step down staff being told to be redeployed, not fully knowing what they will have to endure.
So off they went to ICU, fighting the pandemic on the frontline, leaving me behind working on stepdown unit,
Working with new staff, who would of known it.
Critical care was still up and running, looking after patients which never ended, which is what was expected and always intended.
SDU asking for support from other staff, always grateful for their helping hand,
We all became one, knowing no-one was offended.
Watching the redeployed staff on ICU looking tired and worn out,
Fighting this dreadful virus with all their clout.
Then a shining light was on the horizon,
Bringing hope and inspiration.
A brand-new vaccine and a new medication.
So, from years from now, let's hope it's all over.
With family and friends being reunited,
Happy days so near, then we will all be delighted.
