Inspiring our future workforce

students at careers evening

We were delighted to see more than 400 teenage students attend our latest Health and Social Care Careers Evening.

The event took place on 31 January at Royal Derby Hospital and saw youngsters, aged 13-19, from across Derbyshire and Staffordshire, come along to find out more about the career options we have on offer, as well as the educational pathways they can access.

The Trust would like to say a special thank you to the 60 #TeamUHDB members who volunteered their time to attend the evening and help inspire our future workforce, by being on hand to provide information and guidance on a wide-range of clinical and non-clinical careers.

The students who came along had the opportunity talk to professionals about their future career, and listen to a variety of talks, including routes into medical education, nursing and apprenticeships.

They also had the opportunity to have a go on the surgical robot, try on uniforms at the ‘selfie station’ to see what they would look like in their chosen future profession, and were made aware of our wider future workforce initiatives, such as Princes Trust and Project Search.

We received positive feedback from students, with one saying that "a route into midwifery which I previously had been told was unachievable now seems possible after speaking to such lovely and positive people”.

This is the sixth year UHDB has hosted this event and we are starting to hear feedback that individuals who came to one of the early events are now in an NHS career.

Are you one of those people, or are you working with someone in your team who was inspired to work with us after coming along to the Health & Social Care careers event? If so, lease get in touch with us at uhdb.inspiringafutureworkorce@nhs.net as we would love to hear your story.

The 2021 event will take place on Friday 29 January, and the North Derbyshire Event will take place in Autumn 2020.
