Marathon effort to thank hospital staff

Ben Hall

A grandson is tackling a number of races to thank hospital staff for their exceptional care.

Ben Hall, 28, will take part in over 10 different runs throughout 2020, including a 190 mile ultra marathon and a UK Ultimate Ironman Triathlon, to thank the Nightingale Macmillan Unit , where his Nan, Alma, was cared for in the final days of her life.

Ben’s Nan spent ten days in the Nightingale Macmillan Unit, but sadly passed away on Christmas Day.

“It has to be the worst thing ever to see someone you love in that situation, but everyone on the unit looked after all of our family so well, as well as making sure my Nan received the best care possible.”

cycle “I’ve decided to set myself this challenge to give me something to focus on and try to help others. My family and I are so grateful for the care and treatment my Nan received”

“The staff all provided constant support and reassurance to visitors and family, especially my Grandad, who at first didn’t want to leave my Nan’s bedside. The staff helped put his mind at ease so he could go home and get some much needed rest.”

Alma, Ben’s Nan, was a Nurse at the Derby Children’s Hospital for many years of her life, which is where she met her beloved husband, Gordon. Ben said, “To cross the final finish line of my final race will be a very proud and emotional moment. It is incredibly heart-warming to give back to the hospital staff in memory of my Nan, a lady who provided so much for others over the years.”
