New multi-storey car park now open and parking rules have changed at Royal Derby Hospital
The new multi-storey car park at Royal Derby Hospital is now open (as of Wednesday 5 November), helping to create an additional 500 on-site parking spaces and more disabled parking to improve the experience for patients and visitors who park at our hospital — and the park and ride service will be closing on Friday 7 November.
The five-storey multi-storey car park, which has been built on the site of the old car park 6, can be accessed by driving around the hospital main ring road. It has 91 spaces for Blue Badge holders and spaces equipped with charging points for electric vehicles - which will be in operation in 2026 - making attending Royal Derby Hospital easier for everyone.
The opening of the long-awaited facility also means there have been changes to some of the other car parks across Royal Derby Hospital, and parking on site will no longer be 'short stay only' from 3 November onwards. Most car parks have now reverted back to the setup from before construction began in October 2024, which means several of the car parks have no maximum stay limits (no time restriction on stays). Those changes include:
- Car park 2 (up the ramp and outside the Kings Treatment Centre) has reverted back to standard spaces, having been reserved for Blue Badge holders only during construction.
- Car park 7 (accessed by driving around the hospital main ring road and situated past the new multi-storey car park) has reverted to no maximum stay limits, including Blue Badge spaces
- Car park 8 (to the left of the main entrance at the front of the hospital) has reverted back to a short stay car park (three-hour maximum stay) including Blue Badge spaces (there is no maximum stay limit for Blue Badge holders)
The car parks that will remain with their current setup are:
- Car park 3 (under the Kings Treatment Centre) will stay available for Blue Badge holders only (no maximum stay)
For a full breakdown of what parking provision each car park will offer from Monday 3 November, please see the table at the bottom of this article. Those with up-to-date Blue Badges will continue to get parking for free.
Park and ride will be closing from 7 November
The free-to-use park and ride service, which has been operating from Kingsway Boulevard since construction began on the multi-storey car park, will close at 6.30pm on Friday 7 November. This is to ensure a short period of crossover with the new car park setup, to help patients and visitors who travel by car to the hospital to plan their journeys accordingly.
This service, which we appreciate has been greatly received by our patients and visitors, was only ever a temporary arrangement, as we leased the land for use during the construction period only, and the land has been designated for other uses.
Reflecting on the impact the multi-storey car park can have for patients and visitors at Royal Derby Hospital, Andrew Selby, Director of Estates & Facilities, said: "We are very pleased to be able to open the new car park, which we know will make visiting our hospital easier for all, now and in the future, addressing the long-standing challenge of increased demand on NHS services and a limited parking provision.
"We are grateful to our communities for providing their feedback as part of this project, and also to everyone who has utilised the park and ride service during construction, allowing us to safely build the new car park without impacting on people's ability to access care in our hospital or visit their loved ones on site."
Jonathan Houlston, CEO at noviniti, said: "It has been a great pleasure for noviniti to work with University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust and Willmott Dixon to deliver the new 874-space multi-storey car park at Royal Derby Hospital. This is a significant project for the Trust and will support them in improving the patient and visitor experience at the hospital with a greatly improved on-site parking provision. We would like to thank all involved in the delivery of this exceptional project."
Nick Heath, Director of Delivery at Willmott Dixon, added: "We are delighted that the new multi-storey car park is now open, marking the successful completion of a project that will help resolve parking and congestion issues, and significantly improve the experience for everyone visiting Royal Derby Hospital.
"Our close collaboration with University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust and noviniti has resulted in the delivery of a modern, well-designed and highly functional facility. This new car park represents a major step forward in making Royal Derby Hospital more accessible for patients and visitors, both now and in the future."
