Children's Community Nursing team in running for second national award following win at Nursing Times Awards

A team of compassionate nurses working to ensure more children can receive end of life care at home with their loved ones has been recognised nationally after winning a Nursing Times Award - as well as being shortlisted for a second award. UHDB's Childrens' Community Nursing Team, working in partnership with colleagues from Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH) and Derbyshire Healthcare United (DHU), formed the 'Derbyshire Paediatric Palliative Care Urgent Response Service', to assist children to die in their own homes with their families and home comforts close by, when they otherwise have been admitted to a hospital or hospice.

Tobacco Dependency Treatment (TDT) Programme celebrates its 'First Birthday'

The Tobacco Dependency Treatment (TDT) programme recently marked a significant milestone, as it celebrated its one-year anniversary since its launch in September 2022 - helping thousand of patients on their journey to quitting smoking in just 12 months.

The TDT programme was launched across all UHDB sites to support patients and our communities in quitting smoking. This is a campaign that has been launched across the healthcare system in Derby and Derbyshire, as well as within our sites in East Staffordshire, which offers personalised support for treating tobacco addiction to all patients admitted to our hospitals, including pregnant people and their partners accessing maternity services.

Members of the community invited to Remembrance Day Service at UHDB

Members of the community are invited to attend a Remembrance Day Service at UHDB to pay their respects and honour our Armed Forces.

There will be services held at both Royal Derby Hospital and Queen's Hospital Burton on Saturday 11 November.

Congratulations to the Neonatal team at Queen's Hospital Burton for achieving Bliss Baby Charter Gold accreditation

The Neonatal team at Queen's Hospital Burton has been awarded the Bliss Baby Charter Gold accreditation, which recognises exemplary care to the babies cared for in the unit and their families.

The team, which cares for babies who are unwell or have been born prematurely, is one of only 13 departments to achieve Gold accreditation out of 191 units in the UK.

Male breast cancer patient praises supportive team at Royal Derby Hospital who supported him through treatment

A male breast cancer patient has praised the team at Royal Derby Hospital's Breast Unit for the care they provided to him after his recent treatment for the disease. 69-year-old Mike Burrows, from Ashbourne, Derbyshire, says he felt "out of his depth" as a male undergoing treatment for a condition largely associated with females, and heaped praise on the incredibly "supportive" team who helped him through his treatment.

One of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton's (UHDB) newest public Governors says she is relishing the challenge following her successful appointment to the role. Claire Carter is currently a Senior Lecturer and Business Relationship Manager at the University of Derby, and has previously worked in the NHS in Derby, meaning this new role takes on a greater meaning.

New oxygen flow devices at Queen's Hospital Burton aim to help reduce respiratory patients' length of treatment

An innovative new device which can help reduce the time patients need to spend receiving oxygen therapy is currently being evaluated at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB).

The device, named 'O2matic PRO 100', provides automated, safer, and more comfortable oxygen delivery to patients and will be used by colleagues at Queen's Hospital Burton for six months to analyse its benefits and effectiveness in a real-world setting. If the 'real world evaluation' (RWE) is successful, the machines could be rolled out more widely across the NHS.

A new mum who sadly discovered her baby girl had no heartbeat has told her inspirational story during Baby Loss Awareness Week to recognise baby loss and praise the midwife who cared for her during what she called the 'toughest time of her life.'

Victoria Jones has bravely shared her experience to mark Baby Loss Awareness Week, which takes place from 9-15 October, and said she wanted to highlight the support she received following the tragedy.

From 1 October, Black History Month 2022 begins. This year's theme is "Time for Change: Action Not Words".

An innovative project which embeds medical students into the Patient Experience team to help them gain a deeper understanding of a patient's time spent in hospital has been recognised after being shortlisted for a national award. The Paediatric Medical Students Patient Experience and Quality Improvement Special Study Module (SSM), was developed after colleagues at UHDB identified a gap in the curriculum for students around understanding the full patient journey and the experiences of patients who require admission to our hospitals.
