"UHDB is a very friendly and supportive place to work" Meet Adam, Trainee ACP and member of the UHDB LGBTQIA+ network

Adam M

Can you describe your role at UHDB?

I’m a Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner here at UHDB, I’m quite new in my role having only started in April after being a Charge Nurse on the Coronary Care Unit. But the role is to complement the existing medical teams, taking on more responsibility and undertaking skills and procedures that historically would have been the remit of the medical team. I’ll be undertaking a master’s programme starting in September that will support my growing skill set and knowledge base to become more of an autonomous advanced practitioner, but right now I’m currently settling in, finding my feet and enjoying it so far!

What attracted you to UHDB originally?

I live in South Derbyshire and did my nursing degree at the University of Derby, so all of my nursing placements during that time were based at the Royal Derby Hospital. I found the hospital to be a really friendly place and like a big family, you can walk through the corridors and always bump into a few people you’ve met over the years and have a little catch up. I’ve always found there to be support there for any ongoing learning and people are always happy to teach, and the general vibe of the hospital is always a positive one.

Adam Mansfield You’re part of our LGBTQ+ network, what inspired you to get involved?

I decided to get involved, as being part of the LGBTQ+ community myself and being through some of the obstacles in life that people in our community face on a day-to-day basis it is nice to be able to chat, support and network with colleagues and allies around the trust. Being kept up to date with current news, issues and things that are happening in the community and trust wide is really useful to know. And hopefully there will be some social events happening when COVID goes away!

Who is Adam outside of UHDB?

I do like to relax outside of work, and that involves lots of naps! I enjoy going out with friends to the pub or garden parties and seeing my family. I have a little nephew called Freddie who is always very entertaining whenever I go over to see him.

I really enjoy travelling and holidays, particularly cruise holidays, waking up in a new country each day and exploring is my ideal getaway. I also let my hair down in Ibiza every year with my friends, enjoying the sun, music and atmosphere of the island!

But my usual day is to get home from work and relax with a good Netflix series and a can of lager!

Can you describe a typical day?

My working day starts at 8am on the ward, during 8am to 9am I will update the list of patients, adding in any new patients from overnight. At 9am I go to the board round, this is when the medical, nursing, therapies and discharge teams get to together and go through each patient on the ward, talking about their cases, any investigations they have had or need and if they need any input to enable them to be discharged from hospital. We also discuss any issues that have arisen overnight. We then go onto the ward round, during this time I will be prepping the notes ready for the consultant to see the patient and then updating their plans as we go along. After the ward round I then help do the jobs that have arisen, including referrals to other specialities, reviewing bloods, investigations and acting upon them accordingly. Also communicating with the MDT, patients and their families so we all know what each other’s input is and the plan for the day.

What would you say to someone who is LGBTQ+ and thinking of joing UHDB?

Come and join us! It is a very friendly and supportive place to work, we have the network set up by Dan and Jimmy who are very proactive about inclusivity and visibility and have the support of the executive team. I have never experienced any discrimination or homophobia from staff within the organisation and you are free to be who you are here!
