University Hospitals of Derby and Burton have appointed two new Non-Executive Directors to join the Trust Board. Professor Victoria Chapman and Christine Fearns started their terms of office on 1 February 2020, replacing Prof Avril Drummond and Sir Stephen Moss, whose terms of office had been completed.

Professor Avril Drummond had served as a Non-Executive Director at the Trust since 2014 having been nominated by University of Nottingham. UHDBs constitution includes the provision for a nominated Non-Executive Director as part of the Trust’s university Hospital status. Prof Chapman, who has a Pharmacology background and became a Professor in the School of Biomedical Sciences in 2008, has been appointed to replace Prof Drummond.

Governors have successfully recruited a replacement for Sir Stephen Moss, who joined the Trust Board in 2013. Christine Fearns, who is a Non-Executive Director at Dudley & Walsall Mental Health Partnership NHS Trust, will join the Board to replace Sir Stephen. Christine Fearns has a degree in Nursing and has held senior posts in the NHS in commissioning and acute providers.

Sir Stephen Moss held the position of Senior Independent Director (SID). This role has now been awarded to Non-Executive Director Joy Street.

Dr Kathy Mclean OBE, Chair, said: “Sir Stephen and Prof Drummond exemplified the values of the Trust during their terms of office. Prof Drummond brought an eye for detail to the Board and was a strong voice for teaching and learning at the Trust through her role with the University. Sir Stephen  brought compassion to the role and his knowledge and experience has made absolutely sure the Board never loses sight of the frontline care our staff are providing. I thank them both on behalf of all our staff patients and our communities. I look forward to working with both Prof Chapman and Christine Fearns in the months and years ahead.”

Maura Teager, Lead Governor, said:  "I would very much like to place on record our thanks to both Sir Stephen Moss and Prof Avril Drummond. Both brought considerable expertise and knowledge to the role and their dedication and leadership has benefitted all of our patients, communities and staff over the past seven years.

“In addition, I should like to thank our Governors, who represent local people, our staff and our partners for their work in recruiting Christine Fearns. They have given a great deal of time and commitment to securing this new appointment to the Trust’s Board on behalf of the communities the Trust serves.”
