Volunteer with the Nightingale Macmillan Unit and make a difference every day

The Nightingale Macmillan Unit (NMU) at Royal Derby Hospital is seeking dedicated volunteers to support their impactful, compassionate care of patients.

The NMU provides specialist, compassionate care for people approaching the end of their lives, most often as a result of cancer. The team’s focus is on dignity, comfort and quality of life — supporting patients and their loved ones through one of the most important times in their lives.

The volunteers are a vital part of that care. Working alongside our nurses, doctors and support staff, NMU volunteers bring warmth, conversation and practical help to patients and families. From offering a listening ear to helping serve refreshments or supporting relatives, their contribution makes a genuine difference every single day.

The NMU currently have several volunteer vacancies and are looking for people who can offer empathy, reliability and a few hours of their time each week to support this special team.

What the role involves

Volunteers usually complete one three-hour shift per week on a set day. The unit aims to offer a seven-day volunteer service, with three shifts available each day. Training and induction are provided to ensure every volunteer feels confident and supported in their role.

Who they're looking for

To apply, you’ll need to:

  • Be aged 19 or over and not in full-time education

  • Be available for interview, Trust induction and role-specific training on three separate dates (to be advised)
  • Commit to a minimum of six months’ volunteering
  • Provide identification for DBS purposes (such as a passport, driving licence and recent utility or council tax bill)

If you’re kind, reliable and want to make a real difference for patients and families at the end of life, they'd love to hear from you.
