Colleagues thanked for showing 'overwhelming kindness' to patient with brain condition

Dr Aibak Khwaja and Sarah Marchant have both received praise from a patient

Two colleagues who worked collaboratively to support a patient to receive flexible care, so she could also spend quality time with her family, have been hailed Patient Heroes.

Dr Aibak Khwaja, Junior Clinical Fellow, and Sarah Marchant, Sister, were caring for mum-of-two Hannah at Queen's Hospital Burton, who was admitted to hospital with brain inflammation.

Hannah said she was anxious during her time in hospital but is 'eternally grateful' for the support she received from both Dr Khwaja and Sarah, whose focus on patient-centred care led them to arrange for Hannah to go home to her children and return multiple times a day to receive anti-viral medication.

Hannah said: "Myself, my parents, my partner and most of all, my children, are eternally grateful for both Dr Khwaja, Sarah and all of the nurses on SDEC and AMU. I was cared for in both departments and they acted with such care, compassion and kindness towards me and my family during such a difficult and stressful time. These colleagues made such a difference to me and allowed me to get the treatment I needed while also being able to be at home with my family which meant so much, they acted with overwhelming kindness and compassion."

Both colleagues were recognised for their efforts with a Making a Difference Award, which was presented to them by Dr Arne Hohensee, Medical Director at Queen's Hospital Burton, who praised the duos' commitment to supporting patients to get the care they need, in the right way for them.

He said: "This wonderful feedback reflects two colleagues who have showcased our Trust values and worked collaboratively to deliver exceptional patient-centred care - and the importance of this is clear to see by the significant positive impact this had for both Hannah and her family. On behalf on myself and the Trust, thank you both for all that you do."
