"UHDB has so much to offer"

Anum Nawaz

Two years ago, 21-year-old Anum Nawaz from Burton joined the team in A&E at Queen’s Hospital Burton as a Trainee Healthcare Assistant on an 18 month apprenticeship scheme. Now, she’s fully integrated into the team and looking to further develop her career at UHDB.

Anum is now a Trainee Nursing Associate based in A&E, with her day-to-day tasks including coordinating patients and bed spaces, treating minor wounds, plaster casting broken bones, conducting electrocardiograms (ECGs), taking blood tests and much more in support of the wider team at Queen’s Hospital.

“I can be doing anything from one day to the next and it’s a really fun job, even when you’re not having the best of days.”

When she first started her career at Queen’s Hospital, Anum admitted that she hadn’t really thought about working in A&E, but ever since her first day, she’s never looked back:

“A&E wasn’t an area that I had initially thought about, but over time, the staff helped me and now I absolutely love it here.

“The staff here are like one big family. They’ve seen me laugh, seen me cry and they have been great. It’s always the same whenever I’ve been over to the Royal Derby for my training days, too. Everyone’s been great.”

As well as taking on more responsibility in her role, Anum is also broadening her development at the University of Derby by studying a nursing degree which has been funded by UHDB.

Anum added: “Thanks to my university course, I’ve been on placements in theatres, on the wards, CT and MRI, but I’m committed to A&E!”

We are hosting two clinical recruitment events in Derby and Burton in January, offering you the chance to find out more about clinical roles at the Trust, including those like Anum’s.

“If you’re thinking about joining UHDB, I would say just go for it,” Anum said.

"It doesn’t feel like you’re coming to work, but you’re doing things that you’re passionate about in and around other people who are doing the same thing.”

“I’ve gained so much confidence since starting my role here – I would never have agreed to do this case study when I started, but here I am!”

Our clinical recruitment events will be held on the following dates:

  • Monday 13 January 2020: Lecture Theatre, Royal Derby Hospital, Uttoxeter Road, Derby, DE22 3NE, 4pm – 7pm
  • Thursday 16 January 2020: Medical Education Centre, Queen’s Hospital Burton, Belvedere Road, Burton, DE13 0RB, 4pm – 7pm
