Amputee Rehabilitation team commemorated with Team UHDB Award after helping patient climb Snowdon

The Amputee Rehab Team being presented with their Team UHDB Award

Colleagues in the Amputee Rehabilitation Centre have been recognised for going above and beyond to help a patient scale Mount Snowdon by being presented with June’s Team UHDB Monthly Making a Difference Award.

The team, based at Royal Derby Hospital, help patients who have had a limb amputated by providing specialist rehabilitation, assist with prosthetics and to assist them to find a new sense of normal following a life-changing event.

However recently, two members of the team reached new heights in their commitment to their patients by helping Mark, who had undergone a lower limb amputation, to reach the summit of Mount Snowdon in Wales three months after his operation.

Lizzy Sharples, Rehabilitation Assistant Practitioner, and Gordon Wilson, Lead Prosthetist, worked tirelessly prior to Mark’s nine-mile trek up Snowdon, and supported him during his climb, and their efforts have seen them and the wider team receiving the latest Team UHDB award.

On receiving the award, Lizzy said: “This was definitely the high point of my career. It definitely wasn’t easy, and without Gordon being there to make some adjustments to Mark’s prosthesis along the way, I don’t think we’d have made it.”

Karen Clark, Specialist Physiotherapist in the Amputee Rehab Centre, nominated her team for the award and expressed her pride in her colleagues:

“The team I work in go above and beyond every single day, so if I could get them all an award every day, I would do this. However, this is one of those days when it’s happened and I am really proud of them.

“Lizzy and Gordon provided technical and moral support on the day Mark climbed Snowdon and were determined to support him and to demonstrate how much faith we had in him to complete the climb as well as physically undertaking the 9 mile climb to the top themselves.”

Dr Magnus Harrison, Interim CEO at UHDB, presented the team with their award and heaped praise on them for their commitment and care: “If there was ever going over and above for a patient, so soon after an amputation, this is it. What you’ve done is absolutely incredible.

“You’re a credit to yourself, your patients and the organisation so a huge well done.”
