Bereavement Teams awarded with Team UHDB Award for compassionate care

Bereavement Team at RDH

Our UHDB Bereavement Teams have been awarded our Team UHDB Award for the heartfelt and compassionate work they carry out when helping families through the agony of losing of a loved one, especially throughout the Coronavirus pandemic.

Over the last 10 months, due to the pandemic, our Bereavement Service has had to adjust their service to meet the demands of the pandemic, but has still managed to maintain an exceptional service supporting families despite the increase in workload.

The team based at Queen’s Hospital Burton and Royal Derby Hospital was nominated by a colleague. A member of the team said: “We have not only looked after Bereaved families, but also stood by and supported each other in our personal difficulties related to Coronavirus, that have arisen during what has often been very difficult days.

“Dealing with grief every day is never easy, but it has been made particularly difficult given all the restrictions that we have had to put into place due to the pandemic; for example, the lack of face to face contact and comfort families have been able to provide for their loved ones and in turn that we have been unable to provide to them.

“With the number of deaths greatly increased during the pandemic, and being a support for other colleagues, we rose to the challenge and are very proud of the service we provide to our colleagues and the general public every day.”

Gavin Boyle, Chief Executive, presented the teams with their awards via MS Teams due to social distancing measures. He said: “As a Trust, I think we have an amazing Bereavement Team. I can’t imagine how difficult it has been for you all as a team, especially with the increased workload and emotional demand that has come with your role throughout the pandemic. This award is a massive thank you and well done to you all for everything that you have been doing for Team UHDB and our communities.”
