Construction of new multi-storey car park at Royal Derby Hospital

We are delighted to be bringing long-awaited plans for a new multi-storey car park to Royal Derby Hospital, which will help to improve access to our hospital and improve the experience of patients and visitors. Construction will begin and changes to our parking arrangements will come into effect on Monday 14 October.

The car park will be built on the site of Car Park 6, and will create more than 500 additional spaces when construction is complete, which will include 91 spaces for Blue Badge holders and spaces equipped with electric vehicle charging points.

During this time, there will be changes made to hospital parking for patients and visitors for those who travel by car to Royal Derby Hospital for appointments and visits, including:

  • Some on-site patient and visitor car parks becoming short stay only, with a maximum stay of up to 90 minutes
  • Car parks 4 and 6 will be closed during construction
  • Car parks 2 and 3 will be dedicated for Blue Badge holders (with no maximum stay)
  • A free to use park and ride service for patients and visitors will operate from Kingsway Boulevard (just off the Kingsway Island opposite the Tilia housing development)

You can find out more about all of the above changes below.

Changes to parking on-site during construction

During construction, there will only be short stay parking (maximum stay of 90 minutes) and parking for Blue Badge holders on the hospital site in the following car parks:

  • Car Park 2 and 3: Blue Badge holder parking only (no maximum stay)
  • Car Park 7 and 8: 90 minutes maximum stay, including Blue Badge holders

All other on-site car parks will be closed. A number of drop-off bays and spaces will be located around the site (with a maximum stay of 30 minutes).

Free park and ride service for patients and visitors

The park and ride car park service will be fully accessible and will open for public use during the construction of the new multi-storey car park.

In order to continue to provide parking spaces for our patients and visitors that need to visit Royal Derby Hospital, a park and ride bus service will operate from a new temporary car park. This will be located on Kingsway Boulevard, just off the Kingsway roundabout (near the retail park).

The car park and bus service will be free of charge.

What do I do if I need to park in an emergency situation?

We understand that sometimes, particularly in urgent and emergency situations, you will need to park on-site for longer than the 90 minute maximum stay permitted in our car parks.

We want to ensure that your visit to our hospital is as simple as possible. Therefore, if you breach the maximum stay in our car parks for reasons outside of your control, or when attending in an emergency, you will not be charged extra for doing so.

Examples of situations where this may apply include:

  • Attending our adult and paediatric Emergency Departments, assessment areas, Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) department or in any other emergency situation
  • If you are pregnant and in labour, or are supporting someone that is
  • If there are delays to our clinics / appointments
  • Visiting a patient who is receiving end of life care
  • If you are unexpectedly admitted or need to stay under our care for further tests
  • If you suffer a bereavement

Please speak to a member of the department you are visiting before you leave, and they will be able to help you.

If you still require help with your parking ticket and fee, please visit one of our pay stations located in our car parks or at the main entrance and press the 'help' button to be connected to a member of our Car Parking team.

What do I do if I need to park for a routine / planned appointment or visiting a patient?

If you are attending Royal Derby Hospital for a routine or planned appointment or to visit a friend or relative, please ensure that you use the car park that will best suit your needs.

Parking available for patients and visitors attending for routine appointments, and for visiting a relative or friend in our hospital:

  • Car Parks 7 and 8 will be short stay only (with a maximum stay of 90 minutes) while the new car park is built
  • We have created dedicated parking for Blue Badge holders in Car Parks 2 and 3, with no maximum stay.

There are also a number of 30-minute drop-off bays located at various points around the hospital site, allowing patients to be dropped off at a convenient location for them to get to their appointment where appropriate.

Advice for accessing our maternity services if you are pregnant

All birthing people and partners attending routine pre— and post-natal appointments should make use of either the short stay on-site car parks at Royal Derby Hospital, or the free park and ride service located at Kingsway Boulevard during opening hours (which can be found elsewhere on this page).

If you need to access our maternity services in an emergency and you overstay the maximum stay in a parking space, you will not be charged extra for doing so.

Our park and ride service will stop outside the entrance to Labour Ward (Entrance 21).

For those who wish to be dropped off closer to their appointment, there are 30-minute drop-off bays located:

  • Outside Entrance 21 (for Labour Ward)
  • Slip road near Children's Hospital (for maternity and gynaecology services)
  • We have also created additional drop-off bays outside Entrance 24 for Cancer and Specialist Services
