FM are the 'eyes, ears and hands' of UHDB, says Gavin at SRP

Gavin Gill

Today is World Facilities Management (FM) Day, where we celebrate the contributions made by FM staff across the globe. At UHDB, we are gathering stories from colleagues across our Trust to speak about what this day means to them, and what it is like to work in FM.

We spoke to Gavin Gill, a Porter at Samuel Johnson Community Hospital (SJCH) for 16 years, for his thoughts:

“I enjoy my job, I enjoy what I do, and I’m glad to be here!

“I like helping people and the satisfaction you get out of that. We’re here 24/7 to make sure the patients, public and staff are both safe and happy – whether front of house, or behind the scenes. That’s my favourite part of the job.

We asked Gavin what makes our FM colleagues who they are, and what makes them so important in running an effective organisation.

“The most important part of the job is doing the best you can, and making sure that others can do that too. We’re all one big team, all working together to support everybody at the hospital.

“There is a lot of work we do that people don’t always see – but if a someone wants to know something, they come to us.

“We’re the eyes, ears and hands of the buildings we work in – which we know like the back of our hands!

“Going the extra mile to keep everyone safe and happy” is what motivates Gavin the most in his role. During the challenges that COVID presented, “I would always help somebody in any way I could. Even just having a quick chat with a patient or member of the public goes a long way.”

Gavin said to his colleagues at UHDB: “We’re all doing a fantastic job – let’s keep up the good work!”
