A Derbyshire patient who badly gashed his hand whilst using a pair of secateurs has spoken in glowing terms about the swift care that he received at his local Urgent Treatment Centre.

After nearly slicing the end of his finger off tending to his garden, Richard Lindop had to be driven straight to the Urgent Treatment Centre (UTC) in Ripley, where he was seen much sooner than he would’ve been at A&E.

What is Bandi Chhor and why is it celebrated?

On 4 November Sikhs and Hindus around the world will not only be celebrating Diwali, but also Bandi Chhor Divas, which celebrates the acts of compassion and selflessness from Guru Hargobind – a Guru is a religious teacher of Sikh faith – who remained imprisoned to protest for the rights of wrongly imprisoned Hindu princes.

A Royal Derby Hospital nurse has spoken about sharing her lived experiences of working in the NHS as a black woman to UHDB’s Chief Executive – as part of her role as his mentor in a new Trust initiative.

Members of UHDB’s Board have been matched with colleagues from underrepresented groups – including the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) and LGBTQIA+ community – since the start of the year as part of our Reciprocal Mentoring programme.

Mother thanks ‘amazing’ NICU team for unwavering support after the heart-breaking death of one of her twins

The mother of premature twins has reunited with the “amazing” NHS staff to give them a heartfelt thank you for their care they provided to her precious babies whilst in hospital.

Alison and Jon Elliott, from Alestree, welcomed their twins, Hamish and Hattie, into the world 10 weeks earlier than expected, on 16 May 2020, after Alison had been quite ill in pregnancy with gallstones and pancreatitis.

Due to their prematurity, the twins spent the first part of their lives in our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at the Royal Derby Hospital.

Today is the 25th anniversary of Wear Red Day, the national anti-racism awareness day. In the NHS you don’t get to choose who cares for you depending on the colour of their skin, the colour of their passport or their accent. Racial abuse will not be tolerated.

A new rainbow canopy has been erected outside the entrance to the Emergency Department at Queen’s Hospital Burton. The canopy, which was installed over the course of the last few weeks, will provide shelter for those arriving into the department and to ambulance staff as they assist patients into the unit.

His Royal Highness Prince Richard, Duke of Gloucester, visited Royal Derby Hospital this afternoon (Wednesday 20 October) to thank our colleagues for their phenomenal efforts through the pandemic. UHDB staff have showcased an incredible commitment to supporting our patients and each other throughout the pandemic, with colleagues being redeployed to different acute areas like ICU and A&E.

UHDB’s oldest volunteer celebrates 95th Birthday

Staff and patients at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton have extended their congratulations to its oldest volunteer who has turned 95.

Tom Walker, age 95 from Burton, has been volunteering at the Queen’s Hospital Burton for over 20 years, first starting out as a volunteer in 2000.

The retired painter and decorator, initially started out as befriender at Geoffrey Hodges, supporting Ward 41, 42 and 43. Tom then moved across to the main site and helped support on Ward 11 which was the care of the elderly ward at the time, again as a befriender.

ICU Nurse Paul is 'one in a million'

The actions of a “one in a million” ICU nurse at Royal Derby Hospital have been praised by the grateful family of a patient who sadly passed away this summer. Nurse Paul Gothard perfectly encapsulated the compassionate nature that we value here at UHDB through the way that he cared for and supported both a patient who was at end of life and his family. From coming up with the idea to create a memory box of little keepsakes for the patient’s granddaughter, to sorting food and drinks for the family and staying late after his shift to make sure they were okay, Paul really went the extra mile.

George Bryan Centre – help us find a long-term solution

Early in 2019, the West wing of the George Bryan Centre was destroyed by fire. After the fire, temporary arrangements were put in place. Anyone living in Burton upon Trent, Lichfield, Tamworth and surrounding areas who needed an inpatient stay was admitted to St George’s Hospital in Stafford, and enhanced community mental health services provided support to enable people to stay in their own home.

Endoscopy team presented with CEO Award for continuing to provide superb care through Covid

The Endoscopy team at Royal Derby Hospital have been honoured with the Trust’s CEO Award for not letting the pandemic hinder them from continuing to provide an outstanding service.

Despite the challenges brought on by Covid-19, the Derby team have never let their standards drop and recently had their JAG accreditation renewed, alongside UHDB’s two other units at Queen’s Hospital Burton and Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital.
