Executive Team support porter Avtar on his running challenge to honour our fallen UHDB heroes

A Royal Derby Hospital porter has raised over £5,000 by running in memory of the UHDB colleagues who have sadly passed away during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Avtar Samrai has now run more than 130 miles, after setting out to complete a three mile jog each day for 31 days from the end of April, to help create a memorial honouring those colleagues no longer with us.

Burton Midwife praised for compassionate gesture

Laura Waterworth, Midwife at Queen’s Hospital Burton, has been awarded the June “Patient Hero” Making a Difference Award for her compassionate care throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Laura was nominated by a patient named Katie, who recently had to give birth in isolation due to being in contact with her dad and sister who had both contracted Coronavirus.

Cervical cancer patient urges women to go for smear tests

A cervical cancer patient is reminding other women of the importance of going for a smear test.

Bec, who lives in Derbyshire, was diagnosed with cervical cancer in May 2020. As part of Cervical Cancer Awareness Week, she is also encouraging women to go for their smear tests regularly.

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton has put in place comprehensive measures for staff, patients and visitors for the wearing of face masks and face coverings whilst at our hospitals. From Monday 15 June 2020 all patients and visitors should wear a face covering on entrance to the hospitals and throughout the duration of their visit.

A new mother has praised her colleagues at Queen’s Hospital Burton for making the birth of her first child as easy as possible, despite him being born in the midst of the COVID pandemic. 28-year-old Lucy Harrison said giving birth to her son, Archie, was as normal as she would have expected and paid testament to the staff who showed her great kindness and compassion.

Happy tears were shed yesterday as a Queen’s Hospital Burton patient was finally able to leave Intensive Care after more than 10 weeks on the unit fighting for his life against Covid-19.

David Turley was able to sit up in his bed and take in the adoration of delighted UHDB colleagues as he was wheeled out to a standing ovation – 72 days on from being moved to ITU for treatment.

Our “phenomenal” discharge teams have been selected as the deserved winners of our ‘Team UHDB Award’ after completely transforming the way we safely discharge patients as a Trust.

Nearly quadruple the number of patients are now being discharged from Royal Derby Hospital to before, while double the amount of applicable patients are now also coming through the Discharge Lounge at Queen’s Hospital Burton, compared to before.

Yvonne discharged home after 59 days in hospital fighting COVID

A patient who spent 46 days in Intensive Care battling Coronavirus has thanked staff at Royal Derby Hospital for saving her life after being discharged home yesterday (3 June). 70-year-old Yvonne Thompson was admitted via ambulance on 5 April after self-isolating at home for the week prior with COVID-19 symptoms, including worsening shortness of breath, which showed no signs of improving.

Harry Redknapp has sent a message of support to colleagues at Queen's Hospital Burton for their work during the Coronavirus pandemic. The ex-Tottenham, Southampton, Portsmouth, Bournemouth, West Ham, Birmingham and QPR boss thanked the team, singling out Matron for Emergency Department, Alison Wadlow, for their "amazing work during these difficult times".

Public planning trek to thank our Critical Care colleagues at Queen's Hospital Burton

Grateful members of the public are planning a long trek to “give something back” to all of the amazing UHDB colleagues working in Intensive Care at Queen’s Hospital Burton.

The Trust tripled the size of Burton’s ITU in April, with staff on Ward 14 taking up new roles in Critical Care as part of this to help provide life-saving care to more patients throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

Nightingale Macmillan Unit turns 11!

This week marks 11 years since our Nightingale Macmillan Unit moved to Royal Derby Hospital!

The team have had many special achievements throughout their 11 years, but they say their greatest achievements of all was being able to discharge a patient to her family home in Thailand for end of life care, and being able to palliate the symptoms of a patient so she could have her last wish to holiday in America.

In just over a decade, the team have developed our palliative care services so that we can offer specialist symptom management with access to services within Royal Derby Hospital, holistic end of life care and complex discharge planning.

Burton Nurse reunited with family after 7 weeks apart

A Burton Nurse who has worked on the frontline caring for patients with Coronavirus has shared a video of the moment she was reunited with her beloved children.

Aimie, a Nurse on Ward 9, who has worked at the Trust for five years, left her three children behind with their father at the end of March.

Aimie’s five year old daughter Ivy suffers with Asthma , so is socially shielding. Aimie was worried about putting her loved ones at risk, so when an opportunity came up to stay elsewhere, she took it to protect her family.

UHDB patients spending less time in hospital, thanks to major discharge improvements

UHDB has “revolutionised” the way it discharges patients to ensure that they are the ones to benefit from not spending any more time in hospital than is absolutely necessary.

The Trust has changed the way that it discharges patients from hospital during the Covid-19 pandemic to help speed up the process of helping patients go home or on to their next place of care safely.

Patients urged to “act quickly” and call 999 if they’re experiencing heart problems

A UHDB Consultant Cardiologist has urged patients to “act quickly” and not hesitate to call 999 if they think they’re experiencing problems with their heart. 

The Trust has seen a reduction over the last month or so in the number of emergency patients coming to our hospitals with serious health concerns, such as a heart attack or stroke.

Enhanced Stroke Services are starting this week across UHDB

From Wednesday 20 May 2020 at 8am, UHDB is enhancing its Stroke Services at both Queen’s Hospital Burton and Royal Derby Hospital. This will see patients benefit from improved access to specialist consultant delivered care.

The Trust is expanding the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) at Royal Derby Hospital to be able to treat patients from East Staffordshire in the first critical 72 hours after a patient has suffered stroke.

Royal Derby Hospital worker Cyrus celebrates COVID discharge

A member of staff who spent more than three weeks in intensive care battling Coronavirus was today (15 May) discharged from Royal Derby Hospital to rapturous applause from his friends and colleagues. Cyrus Casandra, who is a Clinical Support Worker for the Hospital Out of Hours Team at Royal Derby, was admitted via ambulance on 11 April after suffering from COVID symptoms for more than a week.

Advice for treating burns after sharp rise in cases in children

Clinicians have issued advice to parents on how best to treat burns and scalds suffered by children at home after a rise in the number of cases at the Trust in recent weeks.

A total of 66 children came to A&E at Royal Derby Hospital with burns in April, which is an increase of 150% in cases in comparison to March as children remain home during the Coronavirus lockdown.
