The Porters Team at Queen’s Hospital Burton have been recognised for their commitment towards patient care and supporting staff.

The team received the “Team UHDB” Award, which was presented by Duncan Bedford, Executive Managing Director at Burton, after a number of staff across Queen’s Hospital Burton nominated them for going above and beyond at all times.

Our sepsis survivor support group continues to grow with 25 people who have been affected by sepsis at our last meeting. The group facilitated by nurses from UHDB and the UK Sepsis Trust offers the opportunity for sepsis survivors to share their experience and support one another.

'Guardian angels' in Derby's Intensive Care Unit receive Patient Hero Award

The team in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Royal Derby Hospital have been presented with the Patient Hero Award for January 2020 by a returning patient, whose life they saved after he contracted meningitis.

21-year-old Harrison Monk was admitted to ICU on 23 August 2019 after his sister found him semi-conscious on the bathroom floor with a purple rash on his face, arms and torso. Harrison then spent a month in the unit as he slowly recovered before being discharged in late September 2019.

Meningitis survivor reunited with team who saved his life

A patient has returned to Royal Derby Hospital thank the team who saved his life after he contracted meningitis last year.

21-year-old Harrison Monk, from Mickleover, Derby, spent a month in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) after falling ill with meningococcal septicaemia, a type of meningitis sometimes referred to as blood poisoning, in August 2019.

Meet ‘KEN’ – the new machine keeping Burton’s surgical equipment clean

The Sterile Services Team at Queen’s Hospital Burton are enjoying the benefits of being the first team in UK to have five newly installed, eco-friendly machines, called ‘Ken’, which are used to clean around 7,000 trays of surgical equipment every month. The department, which processes almost 160,000 wash cycles every year, carefully selected the new machines based on a wide variety of benefits to both the team and the environment.

Ward 402 staff are making sure that Every Day Counts for our patients

A UHDB respiratory ward has nearly doubled the amount of patients that it’s been able to safely discharge home in the morning each day – in the space of just one month. Staff on Ward 402 at Royal Derby Hospital have all banded together to follow a Japanese improvement method, known as ‘kata’, to enhance our patients’ experience by ensuring they don’t spend any more time in hospital than they need to.

Staff Survey sees colleagues showcase their trust in UHDB care

Staff at UHDB have said that the Trust is the place where they would like their families to receive treatment. Each year, the NHS nationally undertakes an anonymous staff survey, with more than 250,000 NHS staff taking part this year – including nearly 6,000 from UHDB.

UHDB Non-Executive Director appointments

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton have appointed two new Non-Executive Directors to join the Trust Board. Professor Victoria Chapman and Christine Fearns started their terms of office on 1 February 2020, replacing Prof Avril Drummond and Sir Stephen Moss, whose terms of office had been completed.

Grand re-opening of Theatre 5 at RDH

Today we have re-opened Theatre 5 in General Theatres at RDH after it has undergone a complete upgrade.  They’re working on Gynae Theatre 2 for later this month and General Theatre 6 for March. 

In April, we have two new state-of-the-art orthopaedic theatres opening at QHB.

All three RDH theatres are being upgraded by KARL STORZ as part of the managed service. All three theatres have the latest OR1 technology, including 4K screens, new lights and a complete revamp of the theatre.

Patients already benefiting from new QHB endoscopy room

A new endoscopy treatment room has opened at Queen’s Hospital Burton to further improve the level of care available to those in need of a procedure. The hospital’s Endoscopy Unit now has three treatment rooms on site – allowing the Trust to see more patients than before and better manage any increase in future demand.
