Patients to benefit from NHS winter funding

UHDB has been granted more than £600,000 to fund innovative schemes to care for and treat patients during the busy winter period.

The funding, which has been granted by NHS Improvement, will be used to implement eight new ideas across our five hospital sites.

The initiatives include  seven-day dedicated pharmacist cover in our A&E departments in Derby and Burton, reducing waiting time for patients requiring scans at Royal Derby Hospital and working closely with representatives from West Midlands Ambulance Service in A&E at Queen’s Hospital Burton to ensure efficient patient handover.

Therapist and nursing cover has also been increased at weekends in the Frail and Elderly Assessment Team (FEAT) at Royal Derby Hospital, benefitting elderly patients who are admitted to A&E to receive the right care more efficiently.

A number of schemes have also been launched at our community hospitals, including at Sir Robert Peel in Tamworth and Samuel Johnson in Lichfield.

Dementia and delirium patients will benefit from increased dedicated and specialist members of staff, ensuring that they receive high quality care in the right place, and reduce potential long length of stays in our acute hospitals.

A Discharge Hub has been set up at London Road Community Hospital in Derby, which brings together a multi-disciplinary team of health care professionals to ensure that patients are being discharged efficiently and effectively, ensuring that their plan for continued care is set out before going home.

Sharon Martin, Executive Chief Operating Officer, said: “Winter brings with it challenges for the NHS, and we see an increase in patients who require help and an increase in the acuity of those patients.

“While we plan and prepare for winter, this additional funding will help us to help you by allowing us to trial new schemes, explore new ways of working and make some adaptations to our services to ensure patients receive the best care as quickly as possible.

“Our teams continue to provide exceptional care for our patients at a challenging time and I would like to thank all of our staff for their continued hard work during the winter months.”
