Renal OPD HCA Tracey pens 'A Poem About HCAs'

Tracey Homar, Renal OPD Healthcare Assistant, has penned the below poem about the role of HCAs.
'A Poem about HCAs by Tracey Homar'
I needed a new challenge
Along life’s long pathway,
So I got a job at Derby
As a renal HCA.
I help a young man out of bed,
To wash and start his day,
I know it’s not the hardest job
As I’m just an HCA
I help another to the loo,
“I’m embarrassed” he does say,
I make him feel less worried
But I’m just an HCA.
A man who has dementia
Needs settling in his bay,
I try to help him feel less scared
But I’m just an HCA.
A lady starts to feel sick,
It happens every day,
I grab a bowl then clean her up,
Cos I’m an HCA
Another round of obs
To make sure everyone’s ok,
They each want some attention
I’m a busy HCA
A fella has an accident,
A face full of dismay.
I help him to the shower
As I’m an HCA
A lady is confused
Brainwaves lost their way,
I reassure with a smile
I’m that kind of HCA
And then ones close to dying,
to pass upon their way,
I’ll sit and hold their hand
I’m just an HCA.
Some may pass while with me
It's peaceful I will pray
A tear will fall onto my cheek
But I’m just an HCA
If they die while in my care,
Them out to rest I’ll lay
To look peaceful for their family
As I’m an HCA
It could be your mum or sister
You see this final day,
Your heart is breaking, I am there,
Just an HCA.
At night when I am home
At the end of each long day
I reflect and remember all of them
I’m just an HCA.
Please don’t look down upon us
We work hard for our pay,
It isn’t kind for you to say
“They’re just an HCA”
So next time you see a uniform
Staff who dress in grey,
Just give a smile or a nod
We’re great us HCAs.
