Shazia's work supporting colleagues during Covid-19 recognised with award

Shazia receiving award

A member of Team UHDB has been recognised by the Derbyshire Branch of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) for their commitment and hard work on the BAME agenda and Freedom to Speak Up campaign during Covid-19.

Shazia Parveen, Deputy Freedom to Speak Up Guardian, was presented with the award yesterday (21 December) for her commitment to her role, despite not being able to be on site while shielding earlier in the year.

The award was presented as part of the RCN’s celebrations for International Year of the Nurse and Midwife and is one of 20 award winners in the county.

Upon receiving her award, Shazia said: “This is a fantastic early Christmas present and the words mean so much.”

Shazia was nominated by her friend and colleague, Ajinder Gidda, who is Sister on Ward 306 at Royal Derby Hospital, who said in her nomination:

“In addition to offering wellness checks and coaching, Shazia became the voice for BAME colleagues and has played a massive part in establishing the BAME Network. Since September, she’s been in place in the Freedom to Speak Up team and her understanding and passion to support colleagues so they feel safe speaking up has been well received.”

Shazia added: “I want to say a massive thank you to Ajinder for nominating me. I hope I can live up to everyone’s expectations for the BAME agenda and continue to provide everyone with the opportunity to speak up in my role as Deputy Guardian.

“I’d also like to say a big thank you to the RCN for everything they are doing, too.”

The Freedom to Speak Up Team will be working over the Christmas period.
