#TeamUHDB celebrate in style at Making a Difference Annual Awards

More than 300 members of #TeamUHDB gathered together for a night of celebration at Burton’s Pirelli Stadium last week for the first annual UHDB Making a Difference Awards.

The evening celebrated the outstanding achievements of individuals and teams from the Trust who have gone above and beyond to either directly or indirectly provide exceptional care to our patients.

The glitzy ceremony, hosted by ITV weatherman Des Coleman, saw nominees for 14 awards come together to celebrate in what was a night to remember.

Des treated guests to not one, but two songs – complete with moonwalk dance moves – creating a real buzz.

Our awards recognised both clinical and non-clinical members of staff from across all five of our sites, before staff dusted off their dancing shoes and took to the dance floor to party the night away.

One of the winners on the night was 79-year-old Joe Sim, who won the Behind the Scenes Award. Joe works as an Energy Monitor at the Royal Derby Hospital, and despite officially retiring a number of years ago, Joe's passion for his work within the NHS has seen him continue in his role and he has now amassed 58 years of NHS service. As well as his role, Joe also volunteers at the Royal Derby Hospital's League of Friends and delivers newspapers to our wards.

After receiving his award, Joe said: "I'm really pleased to have won this award, not just for myself personally, but for the whole team at Facilities Management in Derby and Burton. They're just a wonderful bunch of people to work with."

Another of our winners was the Professional and Practice Development Team who walked away with the Education and Training Award. The team has worked tirelessly to deliver the Overseas Nursing Programme and over the past year has supported almost 150 overseas nurses who have moved to Derby and Burton and joined our nursing team, enabling them to deliver high quality and safe patient care.

Simon Gibson, Senior Clinical Educator, said: "It showcases all of the hard work we've done to help the nurses get into the Trust."

His colleague and fellow Senior Clinical Educator, Deb Eaglefield, added: "It really makes a difference to the nurses and massively impacts on the frontline of care."

Our Community Hospital Team of the Year for 2019 is the Endoscopy Team at Sir Robert Peel Community Hospital. The team were recognised for their determination and hard work to achieve JAG accreditation at the unit back in August 2018, which was renewed once more this year. The team consistently meet their six-week diagnostic, UCR and surveillance targets, and are opening a second Endoscopy room later this year.

Upon receiving their award, the team said: "We are extremely proud to have won this award for all of our hard work."

The winners were chosen by a judging panel consisting of members of our Executive Team and governors.
