The winners of our #TeamUHDB robot naming competition are revealed

staff showcasing new robot

After weeks and weeks of voting, we are delighted to now be able to reveal the new identities of our two state-of-the-art disinfection robots!

More than 100 UHDB colleagues have had a go at naming the UV Disinfection (UVD) Robots and it’s fair to say that we’ve seen some very creative suggestions that have raised a smile or two.

Our Infection Prevention and Control team had the difficult job of picking the two winners of our staff competition and have chosen to name our Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Hospital Burton robots ‘DORIS’ and ‘Victor’ respectively.

The idea to name our RDH robot DORIS, which is short for ‘Disinfecting Our Rooms In Safety’, was sent in by Dr Peter Cull, Emergency Medicine Consultant at RDH.

Meanwhile, our QHB robot will now be named Victor, to symbolise our fight against Covid-19, thanks to Jayne Cotton, Chemotherapy Ward Clerk at QHB.

Both of our winners were presented with Amazon Echo Dots this week after coming out on top of a pun-heavy competition that included suggestions like Optimus Grime, Robo-Mop, Kim and Aggie, and of course, Cleany McClean Face!

The UV Disinfection (UVD) Robots can be programmed to autonomously drive around key clinical areas within the hospital and emit concentrated doses of UV-C light to kill 99.99% of all bacteria in less than 10 minutes.

Using this technology will allow the Trust to provide extra protection to some of our most vulnerable patients, with the robots set to initially be used to disinfect QHB’s Treatment Centre, and across RDH’s Theatres, Combined Day Unit, and Renal Dialysis areas.

#UHDB is one of only a handful of NHS Trusts nationwide – and the first in the region – to purchase the five-and-a-half foot UV-C emitting machines, which flash different colours to signify which stage of the disinfection process they have reached, and have also been programmed to speak certain phrases!
