UHDB and our Armed Forces Colleague Network mark VE Day 80th anniversary

Colleagues, patients and visitors at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB) today, Thursday 8 May, were invited to join a national two-minute silence at 12pm to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day).

As the country marks this day, which provides a national moment to remember the end of the Second World War in Europe and the impact it had on individuals, families and communities, we are highlighting the support available to veterans and the wider armed forces community across the region. UHDB is committed to ensuring that healthcare services are accessible and responsive to the needs of current and former members of the armed forces, as well as their families. This includes signposting to specialist services, raising awareness among staff and providing clear pathways for support.

Through the Trust Armed Forces Colleague Network and the dedicated Armed Forces Covenant Manager, members of the armed forces community and their families can access a range of resources.

Thank you to all wards and departments who have decorated their areas to mark the VE Day commemoration and are supporting their patients in recognising the day as well.

Lara Raworth, Chair of the Trust Armed Forces Network, said: "Anniversaries like VE Day offer an opportunity to reflect on the contribution of the armed forces community, both in the past, for those who are now veterans, and for all of those serving today. UHDB is committed to ensuring that our armed forces community, which includes both patients and NHS staff, can continue to access the right care when they need it, in line with the duties and principles set out in the Armed Forces Covenant."

UHDB has been recognised with the Gold Award from the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Employer Recognition Scheme, reflecting its long-term commitment to supporting the armed forces community as both an employer and service provider and also has achieved accreditation with the Veterans Covenant Healthcare Alliance. The Trust has also signed the Armed Forces Covenant and supports the Pride in Veterans Standard, which recognises and addresses the needs of LGBT+ veterans, particularly those affected by the historical ban on LGBT+ personnel in the military.
