UHDB rated as Good by CQC

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton has again been rated as Good by the Care Quality Commission. We have retained ‘Good’ overall having been fully inspected last in 2019, following the merger in 2018.

The inspectors found that all the services they visited were responsive and well led and our community hospitals were Good across the board. Medical care at Royal Derby remains Good for ‘Effective’. However, the CQCs visit took place because we reported some specific instances about falls. For this reason they have decided to change us to Require Improvement for ‘Safe’.

Gavin Boyle, Chief Executive, said: “We’re really pleased to have retained our Good rating. It has been a difficult year for the NHS and our staff in particular but they have shown through their dedication and professionalism that the services we provide continue to be Good. We’re incredibly proud of the way that our staff have responded throughout the pandemic. We know there are some areas we need to improve on and we’ll be implementing the CQC guidance in full.”

Cathy Winfield MBE, Executive Chief Nurse, said: “It’s reassuring to read the CQC report and see that the CQC have recognised that our staff are caring. In the report the CQC recognise that staff provide good care and treatment, support each other to provide good care and provide services that are focused on the individual needs of patients receiving care. We shouldn’t shy away from the fact that there are areas we can improve, such as falls, and I can reassure all our communities that we are taking action now to improve this.”
