Ward receives first EDC silver accreditation for Trust

Ward 801 receives silver accreditation

Ward 801 at Queen’s Hospital Burton have received silver accreditation for the Every Day Counts initiative to ensure all patients are cared for safely and are appropriately discharged.

The Every Day Counts framework was developed using evidence based best practice and with input from UHDB’s ward staff, patients and NHS improvement.

This initiative recognises ward teams for existing best practice, providing a framework that supports continuous improvement.

Sarah Raddon, Ward Manager on ward 801, was extremely proud to receive the news. She said: “The Silver accreditation reinforces the great work the team are doing around reducing inpatient delays.

“Staff on the ward are really proud and are continuing to work on ways to improve patient experience as well as discharge these patient both safely and quicker.”

The ward also runs a wound clinic where staff have seen 80 patients since April this year who are unable to receive an appointment with their GP. This has helped to reduce overall footfall through the emergency department.

Sarah added: “Over the last few months, the ward has faced issues with discharge delays as well as machines such as an ice machine being out of use, which is an integral part of the patient’s post-operative care.

However, the team trialled the Hilotherm – a 360 degree icing system – which effectively saw patients recovering at a quicker pace due to less swelling to the wound site.

Gill Ogden, Director of Nursing, presented the award in person to the team to praise them for their excellent achievement. She said: “It’s extremely rewarding to hand our first ever Every Day Counts Silver Accreditation to ward 801.

“The team have shown exceptional multidisciplinary team work, taking time to understand delays in their patient pathways and making small changes to reduce these.

“This has resulted in reduced length of stay and an excellent patient experience, thus helping to support reducing the elective backlogs.”

There are other teams who have achieved accreditation and we will be making further announcements over the next week regarding those areas.
