400th patient joins Inflammatory Bowel Disease study

patient joining study programme

We are delighted to announce that recruitment to the IBD BioResource study continues at a brisk pace. We have reached our 400th participant by recruiting over 100 patients in the last six months!

The aim of the IBD (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) BioResource study is to significantly increase our understanding of the causes and new treatment options for Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn’s disease. A large team of doctors, nurses and patients across the country, including our Gastroenterology team at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, has been assembled to run the study with the help and support of the NIHR BioResource.

There have been a number of successful studies of the genetics of Crohn’s Disease and Ulcerative Colitis in which numerous gastroenterology patients have participated.  Leading medical science journals have published the results of these successful studies and they have had a major impact on our understanding of the causes of IBD. The IBD BioResource study intends to build on the findings of these previous studies and the new knowledge gained may lead to improved treatments.

Dr Andrew Cole, Consultant Gastroenterologist, who is leading the study at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, is said to be: “very pleased with the progress of the recruitment”.
