University Hospitals of Derby and Burton has been named in a list of the top 10 trusts for undertaking clinical research nationwide.

A total of 150 studies took place within the Trust over the last year – a 17% increase on the 128 studies that were undertaken onsite in 2016/17.

This work saw the Trust place in 10th place nationally in the ‘Biggest Increase in Research Activity’ category in the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Research Activity League Table.

There was also a huge 62% rise in the number of commercial studies that took place on site, as 26 took place, compared to 16 in 2016/17.

Last year saw the Trust succeed in its application to attain Provisional UK Clinical Research (UKCRC) Registration for its Clinical Trials Unit, which has helped attract the best staff and marked the Trust as being research-active.

Gavin Boyle, Chief Executive of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Being active in research is a really important part of our role as a University Hospital. Research helps us to develop future clinical care but also to offer new treatments to our patients today that they might not ordinarily receive. So, I’m absolutely delighted to see us named as one of the top 10 Trusts nationally for research activity.”

One of the research studies undertaken at the Trust was the highly successful kidney disease study, known as the NURTuRE – CKD study.

Janet Manning, the 100th patient to take part in the study, said: “I was very pleased to be a participant in this study and am so grateful for all of the fantastic care and attention that I received at the Royal Derby Hospital. I would definitely recommend taking part in the study, as it plays a major role in giving clinicians the opportunity to learn more about kidney disease and improve future treatments for other people.

The Research Activity League Table is published each year by the NIHR Clinical Research Network (CRN), to detail research activity across all NHS trusts in England.

The table provides a picture of how much clinical research is happening, where, in what types of trusts, and involving how many patients.
