The Practice Learning Support Unit (PLSU) wishes you a warm welcome to the University Hospitals of Derby and Burton (UHDB).
These pages contain all the information you need prior to starting your placement with us, but if you have any additional questions please contact PLSU who will be happy to assist.
There are a variety of resources and links on this website, some of which you will be able to view now and some of which are only available once you start at UHDB on our intranet (Net-i).
Welcome to UHDB
We look forward to welcoming you to UHDB for your placement and we hope that you are looking forward to it! UHDB covers five hospital sites across Derbyshire and South Staffordshire and offers acute services (including two Emergency Departments), Rehabilitation and Outpatient services. We carry a CQC rating of “good” with some areas of outstanding practice.
During your time with us you will have the chance to meet many individuals with a huge variety of conditions, injuries, needs and difficulties. You will be able to practice your core, transferrable skills including clinical reasoning and time management as well as learn about specialist assessments and treatments that are used in your specific placement area.
We hope you will become more confident in assessment, problem identification/prioritising, treatment selection and evaluation to work towards your patients’ goals. We also hope that you will increase in confidence and take advantage of the opportunities to learn and develop.
We encourage you to be proactive in your learning and take advantage of the opportunities that are available to you to enhance your learning here at UHDB. You will be introduced to these by your educator.
PLSU are here to support you during your clinical placements. If you have any concerns, queries or questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Vision and values
UHDB was formed in 2018 by merging Derby Hospitals and Burton Hospitals Trusts. Following the merger UHDB worked hard and consulted with staff to bring 12,500 team members and five hospitals sites together, resulting in the development of the vision and values > of the newly formed Trust. We ask that all students on placement at UHDB join us in practicing these fundamental values and behaviours of compassion, openness and excellence.
In addition, our Exceptional Care Together Strategy 2020-2025 > outlines how UHDB plans to provide the best possible care to patients and meet the aims of the NHS's long term plan.
