International Women's Day 2021

Big News - IWD2021

Monday, 8 March marks International Women's Day and we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate women in the NHS.

Women make up just over 80% of our UHDB workforce and with this year's theme being #ChooseToChallenge (a call-to-action for challenging gender inequality across the world), some of our senior leaders have shared their messages for girls, young women and their colleagues to help them fulfil their aspirations.

Here at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton, we’re constantly promoting the achievements of all our staff within our workforce. We’ve spoken to some female members of our UHDB Trust Board about what International Women’s Day means to them and the importance of female leaders.

Cathy Winfield, Executive Chief Nurse, said: “International Women’s Day is so important – it helps us to celebrate powerful women in leadership and what women can bring to society, to our workplaces and to our professions and careers.

“I’ve worked with many inspirational women over the years on all levels from my mother in law in Turkey who has bought up ten children and has been the fundamental backbone to the family, to some of the Chief Executives that I have worked with that have inspired me to get to the position that I am in today.

“It doesn’t matter what you do or what role you play in society, what you bring to the world is really important – never underestimate the impact that you have.”

Amanda Rawlings, Director of People and Organisational Development, said: “Annually, International Women’s Day provides a platform to stop, reflect and recognise the long and difficult journey globally women have had and continue to have for gender equality. Whilst much has been achieved and should be applauded, still across the world women do not experience equality.  COVID-19 has put a spotlight on the kinds of roles and responsibilities women hold in society and the contributions and burdens they carry. In this year’s International Women’s Day, it is important we recognise this and prepare to take action.

Sharon Martin, Chief Operating Officer, said: “International Women’s Day is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate everything that we as women bring to the table – not just in the NHS but to society itself. This year’s theme is ‘Choose to Challenge’ – We can choose to challenge bias, discrimination, and stereotyping based on gender.”

Over the last year, we’ve also shared many news stories that highlight women and their invaluable contributions to healthcare. Here are just a few that hit the headlines.
