'Our Heroes' One Year On

One Year On - a poem from Trevor

Today marks exactly one year on from the UK going into lockdown. We continue to share colleagues thoughts, reflections, poems and images from their time working through the pandemic.

The pandemic has impacted each of us differently, so now is a good opportunity to reflect on the year gone and begin to look forward.

Trevor Hickling, Estates Project Support Officer, has written a poem reflecting on our NHS heroes, who have worked tirelessly through the pandemic:

Our Heroes

From the flowers that bloom in Spring,
through the heat of the Summer sun.
From the Autumn leaves that fall,
Our Heroes work is never done.

Working tirelessly day and night,
our heroes battle to win this fight.
Fighting back the tears,
and sometimes treating our own,
our heroes showed that no one would face this crisis alone.

Our heroes fight with courage,
our heroes find the strength,
our heroes battled on,
in the knowledge,
that some of our own heroes have gone.

Our heroes may have fallen,
our heroes may have lost their fight,
but everyone around them, answered their call,
they gave them their all,
and they fought with all of their strength and might.

We are tired,
some of us are broken,
memories of our fallen give us comfort,
their dedication to the end celebrated & often spoken.
As we strive to gather our strengths,
As We strive to ensure we can cope.
We all strive to come through this,
knowing around the corner a vaccine will give us hope.

There is no one that has not been affected,
let us all take a moment and pause.
It’s nothing personal, the whole worlds become infected.
As we look out for our NHS family & beyond,
we realise we are all only human,
dedicated, and true, but know we have no magic wand.

And as we carry on,
with our heads held high.
Even when we are not ok,
know it’s ok,
life is sometimes cruel, life is sometimes unfair.
But we are there for one another,
We all do what we do, because we are committed and we all care.

So as we think of our fallen,
know that their memories live on,
for our thoughts of them will never depart.
For these were our heroes fallen,
forever cherished,
forever within our heart.
