Ophthalmology (eyes)

The ophthalmology service cares for patients with eye conditions or injuries to the eye.

We assess, treat and carry out surgical procedures at three of our hospitals (Royal Derby Hospital, Queen's Hospital Burton, and Samuel Johnson Community Hospital).

Outpatient clinics

We run general outpatient clinics for patients with

  • eye problems related to diabetes
  • glaucoma
  • medical retina
  • anterior segment
  • oculoplastic disorders

Eye surgery

Eye surgery is performed at Queen's Hospital Burton and Royal Derby Hospital using modern methods and equipment. Patients are usually allowed to go home the same day as their surgery (day case patients).

Surgeries include:

  • cataract surgery
  • laser therapy
  • glaucoma surgery
  • intravitreal injections
  • oculoplastics
  • vitreoretinal surgery

ECLO support

Eye Care Liaison Officers (ECLO’s) offer practical and emotional support to anyone affected by sight loss, including families and carers.

They can offer:

  • emotional support / counselling
  • help with employment
  • information about visual impairment registration (CVI) and benefits
  • guidance on equipment and aids to help at home
  • technology and much more.

If you wish to meet with Eye Care Liaison Officer, you don't need to make an appointment.
