Simulation facilities

Simulation course

We provide state-of-the-art facilities for health care professionals to learn in a safe, effective way.

A variety of clinical scenarios can be created at a level to suit those training, from student nurses to registrar level doctors.

Sessions can be watched in our observation rooms using sophisticated audio-visual equipment, and we can accommodate small and large groups in our teaching rooms and 60-seat Lecture Theatre.

This is an opportunity to promote reflective practice through both self appraisal and peer evaluation, led by one of our medical facilitators. The facilitator takes notes during the scenario and uses these to provide individual and relevant feedback to candidates, including the patient assessment, clinical skills and team working ability.

Adult simulation facilities

We offer a range of adult simulation training, including:

  • basic life support manikins (Resusci-Anne)
  • ALS manikins
  • SimMom
  • Laerdal Essentials

We are one of the few hospitals in the UK to offer the Laerdal Essentials - a fully transportable and wireless simulation manikin. It's portablility enables us to deliver training in clinical areas, for example the Emergency Department or Intensive Care Unit. This means scenarios are as realistic as possible.

Participants are encouraged to carry out examinations and observations in real time and to perform any relevant interventions, for example cannulation, catheterisation and 12-lead ECG monitoring.

All candidates who participate in simulation training are given a constructive debriefing following their scenarios. This is an important element of the learning process, is facilitator-led according to client group, and incorporates feedback on clinical skills, scenario management and non-clinical skills such as communication and team working.

Paediatric simulation facilities

We offer a range of paediatric simulation training, including:

  • basic life support baby manikins
  • basic life support junior manikins
  • SimJunion
  • Simbaby®

Simbaby® is a computerised manikin that can mimic physiological response to injury or illness. It can be used in the Simulation Suite or moved to an actual clinica setting for a more realistic experience.

Scenarios are facilitated by a senior paediatric doctor, usually a consultant or senior registrar. All candidates who participate in simulation training are given a constructive debriefing following their scenarios.  This is an important element of the learning process, is facilitator-led according to client group, and incorporates feedback on clinical skills, scenario management and non-clinical skills such as communication and team working.
