Derby GP Training Programme
The GP Training Programme is well-established, and is an inclusive, friendly, and supportive scheme for both GP trainees and GP trainers.
The programme continues to attract high quality candidates, producing excellent principals at the end of the three-year period.
Many of our trainees continue to practice in Derby and Southern Derbyshire after their training, with a high proportion joining us as trainers.
The programme is based at UHDB, at the Royal Derby Hospital site.

Training practices
Our training practices cover a substantial and diverse area throughout Derbyshire and its borders. Throughout your training, opportunities are provided for experience within both urban and rural areas.
We encourage you to consider travel arrangements due to the distance between our sites.
Our hospital posts are based at UHDB, at the Royal Derby Hospital, with some at linked Nottingham hospitals. The Royal Derby Hospital has 1,159 beds, and provides state-of-the-art care to over one million patients from Derby and the surrounding areas every year.
The map above shows the training practices for the Derby GP Training Programme.
Training placements
The GP Training Programme is structured as 24 months spent in general practice, and 12 months spent in acute hospital posts.
The hospital posts are undertaken at Speciality Training (ST) 1 and ST2 level, with the majority of posts based at the Royal Derby Hospital site. Training practices linked to the programme vary from urban, to suburban, to rural locations. All offer a very high standard of training and support, offering trainees the very best opportunity to develop into to confident and competent GPs.
Integrated training posts (ITP)
We offer the opportunity for GP registrars to gain additional experience in posts outside of general practice, to supplement their specialty placements.
The Derby GP Training Programme prides itself in being a front-runner in developing a suite of ITP options, having built on our experience of offering paediatric posts as an ITP for many years.
ITP placements are done during a ST2 general practice post, and typically involve two days per-week working within the specialty (with Wednesday as a protected educational day, and the other two days working within the practice).
The speciality placement will usually be based within an acute unit with plenty of opportunities for outpatient clinic experience and there is no on-call requirement.
Our ITP placements are:
- Children's Emergency Department (Royal Derby Hospital)
- Rheumatology (Royal Derby Hospital)
- Public Health
- Adult Emergency Department (Royal Derby Hospital)
- Obstetrics and Gynaecology (Royal Derby Hospital)
- Community Psychiatry (based in one of the four Community Mental Health team localities in South Derbyshire)
- Palliative Care (based at Ashgate Hospice in Chesterfield)
- GP Home Visiting services (Derby City South Primary Care Network and Alfreton, Ripley, Crich and Heanor Primary Care Network)
- Musculoskeletal Assessment and Treatment service

Teaching (half-day release) and courses
We facilitate a highly regarded Half-Day Release (HDR) Teaching Programme, which is well supported by our GP trainers. Experienced GPs are also present at each session.
In the first and second years, the groups meet on a weekly basis to concentrate on GP related educational sessions. These sessions are jointly run by a GP trainer, a specialty consultant, and a GP speciality training registrar. Subjects covered are relevant to that specialty, but with special emphasis placed on the GP perspective.
In the third year, there are weekly sessions covering many clinical and management topics using GP trainers and outside resources as appropriate. The syllabus is mainly problem or scenario based.
The Derby GP Training Programme also run a range of full-day courses throughout the academic year, offering opportunities for various aspects of the curriculum and training interests.
