Physiotherapy in group rehabilitation

All patients will have a full assessment by a qualified physiotherapist upon referral to group rehabilitation. Following this, a clinical diagnosis will be identified and used to formulate a treatment plan that is tailored to the individual patient and their specific needs and goals.

We offer a range of physiotherapy treatment pathways at group rehabilitation. Patients may attend individual one-to-one sessions or may be referred to occupational therapy if functional or work issues are identified. Other, more condition specific sessions for knee ligament reconstructions and osteoarthritis of the knee are also available depending on the patient’s individual needs. All patients, whether treated individually or in a group setting, will have a named physiotherapist that is responsible for their care.

Individual one-to-one sessions

Our physiotherapy service will provide assessment and treatment of your muscular-skeletal condition. Although a large proportion of our treatment is exercise based, treatment may also include manual therapy, soft tissue massage, and education regarding long term self-management strategies.

Knee ligament reconstruction rehab

A large proportion of our workload and an area we specialise in is the rehabilitation of patients who have recently had ligament reconstructions performed mainly by three orthopaedic surgeons; Mr Geutjens, Mr Straw and Mr Bhangoo who are predominately based at the Royal Derby hospital. Our rehabilitation protocols have been devised in conjunction with the orthopaedic surgeons to ensure the patients are receiving the best possible care after surgery. Access to the rehabilitation programme specific to each surgery is under the knee ligament reconstruction section.

Ankles

The majority of our ankle referrals are from the orthopaedic consultants after ankle fractures. We normally see patients when they are just taken out of plaster and our aim is to rehabilitate them from walking with crutches through to a return to work. Our ankle patients are able to access the gym between 9.30am -11.00am Tuesday and Thursday, and are treated by both physiotherapists and occupational therapists. Physiotherapy techniques may include a home and gym exercise programme, local joint mobilisations and education regarding self-management strategies.

We work closely with orthopaedic consultants at Royal Derby Hospital and have strong links with orthopaedic clinic, A&E consultants, trauma and orthopaedic wards and other rehabilitation disciplines such as occupational therapy splints, orthotics and podiatry. We communicate verbally or in written format with the referrer, as appropriate, regarding patient progress, and maintain written records for all patients.
