I am a strong supporter of the NHS but not uncritically. I have always received excellent care myself but I know that not everyone has the same experience. There is a problem of funding, particularly at present, but that is not the whole reason. I am committed to making things better for patients and making things better for staff is an important part of this.
I was born and grew up in Derby and now live in the Derbyshire Dales. Much of my career was as a senior manager in local authorities but more recently I worked with central government on public service improvement.
My professional roles in the NHS began when I was appointed as a Non-executive Director of Derbyshire Primary Care Trust in 2006. Following this, I moved to University Hospitals of Derby Foundation Trust where I served as a NED for nine years.
