The Derby Breast Unit is a self contained unit located within the Royal Derby Hospital, staffed by four consultant surgeons, three consultant radiologists, two consultant oncologists, a consultant plastic surgeon and 6 breast care nurses.
We offer a wide range of expertise covering the diagnosis and management of benign and malignant breast disease. Screening services are provided for the NHS Breast Screening Programme in Southern Derbyshire and the Familial Cancer Service. In our screening service we have about 78,000 women in Southern Derbyshire who we invite every three years for screening.
We also run symptomatic clinics where anyone with breast symptoms (male and female) is referred by their GP, as well as a prosthetic fitting service.
Breast imaging is currently provided by a team of four consultant radiologists, a full-time long term locum, a consultant radiographer and a further speciality doctor currently in training. Their work is supported by a large cross site team of 12, reporting plain film, CT and MRI radiographers.
There is fully established advanced practice support from the mammography team who provide film reading, stereotactic core biopsy and breast needle localisations.
In addition to this we have 9 speciality registrars on rotation from Nottingham and Leicester, which will increase in September 2019.
