Gynaecology Oncology news and patient stories

Kay to retire today after 37 years in the NHS

Kay Fleetwood retires

We’d like to wish a very happy retirement to the fantastic Kay Fleetwood, who leaves the Trust today having made a huge difference throughout her 37 years in the NHS.

Kay is our current Gynaecology Lead Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist and has played a pivotal role in helping to shape the Gynaecology CNS role into what it is today, so that we are able to provide vital support to women with gynaecological cancer.

Since first joining our Trust in 1987, Kay has helped countless numbers of patients; firstly in her capacity as a staff nurse, then as a ward sister and then, in 1999, in gynaecology oncology, when she became our very first CNS in the speciality.

We’d all like to wish Kay a very well deserved retirement, including Mr Anish Bali, UHDB’s Medical Director for Women’s and Children’s services, who said: “It's been a privilege to work with Kay over the past 15 years. She has always been calm, balanced and empathetic in her approach to patients and certainly has made my life a lot easier in clinics and wards when faced with breaking bad news.”

Mr Bali added: “Nothing appears to be too much for Kay and our oncology services run smoothly largely due to her organised approach and willingness to always go the extra mile. Patients and staff have always spoken highly of Kay and she will be sorely missed by many.

“I personally have always enjoyed hearing about her holiday travels, in particular her skiing expeditions and of course her lovely Westie, Tilly!  Kay, I wish you all the best in retirement and I will miss you.”

Happy retirement, Kay!
